Title
Political-dreamings! -visions of peace! -perspective horrors!
Description
William Windham, uncaricatured, lies in bed dreaming. On the left side of the print the figure of Death, a skeleton form straddles a pile of British trophies. By the foot of the bed, a fat demon with the features of Charles James Fox, with a barbed tail and webbed wings, plays a guitar and sings “Caira!-Caira!-Ca-i-r-a!” By the near side of the bed, Justice sits on a chamber-pot, bowing her head and registering despair. Her scales are broken and dismantled. In the background of the print stands Napoleon with a rope around Britannia’s neck. Published a year after ‘Design for Naval Pillar,’ the use of the motifs in this print further supports the argument of ‘Design’ critiquing both the French and British authorities.
