Title

The Nursery, with Britannia Reposing in peace

Description

In this print, a childlike Britannia sleeps in a large wicker cradle, rocked by Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth, who is dressed as an elderly woman. Hawkesbury, a thin nursemaid, enters the left side of the scene with an ornate child’s commode, inscribed ‘French C...k..g Chair,’ with an image of the bonnet-rouge on the head of the chair. Charles James Fox hands out napkins to dry on a cord. With this print, Gillray his true views on Britannia. Rather than a stoic being, she is infantile and unable to stop French forces from taking over.
