Title

A Colossal Statue 230 feet high: proposed to be erected on Greenwich hill

Description

This print was the frontispiece to John Flaxman's "A Letter to the Committee for raising the Naval Pillar" (London, 1799). The design shows a colossal statue of Britannia paired with a lion to her right and holding a shield on her left. Inscribed on the base of the statue is "BRITANNIA BY DIVINE PROVIDENCE TRIUMPHANT." A "Scale of Feet" is located at the right edge of the design. Five figures on the left hand side of the page and a horse and carriage below the pedestal on the right are included, presumably also to show scale.
