Title

The genius of France triumphant, -or- Britannia petitioning for peace. -Vide, The Proposals of Opposition

Description

Britannia is here shown groveling before a monster representing the French Republic. Behind her stand Charles James Fox, Richard Brinsley Sheridan and Charles Stanhope, all wearing the bonnet-rouge. The French monster is supported by a bed of dark clouds and is made up of a man with a guillotine for a head. Fox holds out two large keys labeled ‘Keys of the Bank of England’ while Sheridan proffers a document that reads ‘We Promise the Surrender of the Navy of Great Brita[in]-of Corsica-of the East & West Indias- & to abolish the Worship of God.’ Gillray here connects both Fox and Britannia to the French Republic. Britannia, weak and begging, offers her shield and spear to France, while Fox stands behind her guised as a French soldier.
