Title
The hopes of the party! Or the darling children of Democracy!
Description
William Holland’s print shows a monstrous depiction of ‘Democracy’ wearing the bonnet-rouge sitting on a type of stone or stump. Two manikins sit on each of her knees: on the left, Charles James Fox and the right John Horne Tooke, who also wear the bonnet-rouge. Holland’s print is included in the exhibition to show how other printmakers adopted Gillray’s established icon of Fox and the bonnet-rouge.
