Title

Shrine at St. Ann's Hill

Description

‘Shrine at St. Ann’s Hill’ depicts Charles James Fox kneeling before an altar appearing in the shape of a guillotine. Three pedestals are positioned on the altar resembling the Ten Commandments, but of ‘DROIT DE L’HOMME.’ Below these are two busts: (R): ‘Robert-\speire and (L): ‘Buona\-parte.’ Between these busts the bonnet-rouge is placed on a post with a skull. From the upper left corner, winged heads of six members of the opposition descend towards Fox (Norfolk, Landsdowne, Bedford, Tierney and Lauderdale). They all wear the bonnet-rouge and look towards the ‘Droit de l’Homme.’
